I'm With Her

I'm With Her

This is was a originally a Facebook post I wrote on election day. I manly wanted to put it up here as a counter point to the reaction essay I also posted, maybe as something of a reminder to my self. And because I think the aspirations still stand.

I voted!

Not just because I don't like Donald Drumpf, and I deeply believe he is a terrible person, a fascist, and needs to be stopped. I voted because I'm with Hillary, and I pretty much have been since the beginning.
I'm with Her because I honestly feel that out of every single candidate that ran this year, primaries or otherwise, she is the most qualified and competent, and will get A LOT of really good things done if she wins. I'm with Her, because its clear to me that behind the "boring drone" of her points and plans, she is passionate (in her own quiet, over-scrutinized way) about middle-class families and the environment, and has a legitimate road map to use those passions as drivers for economic and social growth. I'm with Her because I feel like she's genuinely heard the outpouring of support for the issues raised by Bernie Sanders, but has the pragmatism and intelligence to realistically navigate the gridlock of the political system to actually follow through on them.
I'm with Her, because I have an enormous amount of respect for her as a person after seeing the poise and unyielding resolve she has displayed through the onslaught of a mockery this year has made of the profession she has dedicated her life to, and through the countless painstakingly-transparent attacks and allegations we've seen mounted against her in the course of the campaign. I'm with Her because, even though I was definitely put off by the idea of such a political insider, and rubbed the wrong way by her ties to wall street, I'm confident we've seen enough of what's behind her public guise to say the she is essentially a good person, and genuinely believes in the issues she says she does, and will fight tooth and nail to make them happen. And because even the less savory connections are a means to an end, rather than an end in of themselves, and seeing her pitted against such an unhinged demagogue has helped me realize the difference between being disillusioned with an inefficient governmental system, and valuing the experience necessary to make meaningful change to it. I'm with Her because I think it is true she has faced an unprecedentedly inordinate amount of scrutiny at the hands of a out-dated, misogynistic status quo, and I think its incredibly telling that given the shear volume and vehemence of efforts and resources dedicated solely to discrediting her, she has yet to be meaningfully discredited.
I'm with Her because I think its about damn time for the first female president of the United States, and maybe if she wins back to back with Obama, the next time we have a candidate run that threatens the fragile, petty, rich-white-male establishment, they'll finally realize we're voting for them not because they're a "token candidate," but because they're the strongest, most intelligent, best fitting person for the job.
I know you've heard a lot of people telling you to go out and vote today, especially if you're still undecided or conflicted about Hillary, and you're probably sick of it, but I also know if you're like me you've probably heard a lot of talk suggesting no one out there likes or is passionate about Hillary, and listing reasons you shouldn't like her, or feel bad about voting for her. I realize this is probably preaching to the choir in my immediate circle but I also know there hasn't been anywhere near enough positive confirmation in this election season, so if anyone is, or knows someone who is thinking of sitting it out because of lack of inspiration, I've got passion to spare, and more reasons you can get behind if none of the above does it for you! GET OUT AND VOTE! There's still time, and NO EXCUSES!
